Rifle Bull Elk Hunts

Montana Limited Entry Elk Draw Rifle Odds — HD 590-20

The 590-20 is one of Montana’s premier limited-entry elk permits. Drawing takes planning, but we walk our hunters through the process from start to finish. All licenses are issued through Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks.

How the Draw Works

Step 1

General Elk Combination License (Nonresidents) before applying for 590-20, nonresident hunters must draw a Montana General Elk Combination License. Montana uses a Preference Point System:One standard preference point may be purchased each year.

Booking with Sylvester and Sons allows you to purchase an additional Outfitter Preference Point. Maximum total: 3 preference points. More points = higher priority in the draw. Most clients with 2–3 preference points draw their general tag consistently.

Step 2

590-20 Limited Entry Permit
After securing your general license, you apply for the 590-20 permit using Montana’s Bonus Point System.

One bonus point earned per unsuccessful year. Bonus points are squared in the draw. Example: 3 bonus points = 10 total chances in the drawing. Bonus points improve odds but do not guarantee a tag.

Historically, 590-20 success rates fluctuate around 20–30% depending on applicant numbers and tag allocation.
